Teach with MASKIT, our Youth Education Program at Astoria Center of Israel.
The following positions are available for 5778 (the 2017-2018 school year). We encourage applicants who can commit to multiple positions, but will accept applications from those applying to specific roles. All teachers will be given a full schedule of classes and ACI activities. Teachers are expected to be able to commit to the schedule, including occasional community events outside of the class hours (such as the Purim Party, the Chanukah Party, and the End-of-Year Shabbat Service).
Tot Shabbat Leader: ACI is looking for a dynamic, experienced, and creative person to lead a program geared towards children ages 6 months - 4 years, who will be accompanied by their parents. Applicant should be familiar with Shabbat themed songs and basic prayers (such as Hinei Ma Tov, Oseh Shalom, Shema, etc). The Tot Shabbat leader will create engaging activities for each session, using arts and crafts, storytelling, theatre, music and movement to captivate and entertain the children. Ability to play an instrument is a plus but not required. At the end of each Tot Shabbat session, the children, parents and leader join the congregation in the main sanctuary for the conclusion of Shabbat services. Hours: Alternating Saturday morning from 10:30 - 11:30am in the social hall.
Junior Congregation Leader: ACI is looking for an engaging leader for our Junior Congregation services. The ideal candidate is enthusiastic about Jewish prayer and singing, has experience with 5-8 year-olds in school and/or a camp setting, and has good knowledge of Jewish prayers. The goal of these services is to familiarize our children with the Shabbat morning prayers, themes, and songs, so they can participate in and help lead the Junior Congregation service that is geared to their developmental level. Numerous honors, such as opening the Ark, carrying the Torah, leading prayers, receiving aliyot, etc., would eventually be given to encourage active participation in the service. The ultimate goal is for our children to be comfortable participating in a regular Shabbat service in the main sanctuary. At the end of each Junior Congregation service, the children and leader join the congregation in the main sanctuary for the conclusion of Shabbat services. NOTE: The Junior Congregation leader will also lead a one hour service on the first day of Rosh Hashanah as well as on Yom Kippur morning. Hours: Alternating (non-Tot Shabbat) Saturdays from 10:15 - 11:15. At 11:15 the children and leader join the congregation in the main sanctuary for the conclusion of Shabbat services.
Hebrew Conversation Instructor: ACI is seeking a native Hebrew speaker to teach conversational Hebrew to our upper school children (ages 9 - 14) who have an elementary background in Hebrew reading and writing. The aim of the weekly half hour class is to enable the students to engage in basic Hebrew conversation, and to increase their fluency in reading and writing, both in print and script. Hours: Saturdays, 9:15am - 10:00am
Kitah Bet Teacher: The Tuesday afternoon class is geared towards children ages 7 through 9 who have a basic knowledge of letters and vowels and can read words slowly. Their focus will be on Hebrew conversation, vocabulary, and language development and a higher level of reading and conversation. The class will also continue exploring concepts in Jewish practice, values, culture, and tradition. The ideal candidate, who is a native Hebrew speaker, would have experience working with elementary, middle, and high school children either in a camp, school, or other setting. Hours: Tuesdays, 3:30-5:30pm
