This Week In Hebrew School
|
This week we continued our unit on Shabbat. In Art class, students finished decorating their challah covers. We then reviewed the Kiddush blessings we make every Friday night, and each student had a chance to decorate their own Kiddush cup while listening to Shabbat songs.
In Judaic Studies, students explored the custom of ending Shabbat with the Havdalah ceremony, when we fill a cup with wine or grape juice; light a candle symbolizing the separation between the holy (Shabbat) and the mundane (the rest of the week); and sniff the spices (besamim) in order to comfort the soul, which is saddened by the departure of the “extra soul” that it received on Shabbat. The candle is typically braided, symbolizing the diversity of the Jewish people, who come together to create one flame.
Morah Esther then performed the Havdalah ceremony for each class and students had a chance to make their own besamim sachets. These will be added to their family Shabbat box once students craft the candle sticks we light on Friday night and the Havdalah candle we light 25 hours later.
Havdalah is intended to require a person to use all five senses: to hold the cup, smell the spices, see the flame of the candle, hear the blessings, and taste the wine
(ACI’s besamim recipe consists of cloves, star anise, cinnamon, cardamom, and allspice.)
During regular classes, Rabbi Josh gathered students from Kitah Gimmel who have upcoming Bnei Mitzvot to begin learning how to give a D’var Torah.
Finally, all classes gathered in the main sanctuary with Rabbi Josh as he reviewed the Birchot Hashachar (the morning blessings we recite as we rise each morning, acknowledging everything we have before we begin our day) and what each of the blessings mean.
