This Week in Hebrew School
|
In Hebrew school, we started our unit on Lag B’Omer and Shavuot. In Kitot Bet and Gimmel, we delved into the celebration of Lag B’Omer, exploring its significance in bridging the gap between the Exodus from Egypt and the giving of the Ten Commandments. Our introduction to Gematria, revealing the numerical equivalents of the Hebrew letters, sparked curiosity among students as they uncovered the deeper meanings behind words. We acquainted ourselves with holiday-related vocabulary, engaging students in writing exercises featuring words like מדורה (bonfire), אש (fire), מוזיקה (music), and ריקודים (dances).
Meanwhile, Kita Aleph learned to read holiday-related words and participated in a movement game, showcasing their growing mastery of vocabulary.
In Music and Art, students across all classes dedicated time to complete their craft projects for their personalized Shabbat boxes (a catch-up day for students who were absent). Kitot Bet and Gimmel revisited the significance of the Saturday night ritual of reciting Havdalah, learned why we recite the blessings, and discussed what it signifies. We then learned how to craft colorful beeswax Havdalah candles and sang Shabbat songs.
In Judaic studies, Kita Aleph absorbed insights from a video elucidating S’firat Ha’omer, the 49-day countdown from Passover to Shavuot, marking the journey from the Exodus to the giving of the Torah. They explored the vibrant festivities of how Lag B’Omer is celebrated in Israel, symbolized by bonfire rituals honoring the enlightenment of Torah scholar Shimon Bar Yochai.
Kitot Bet and Gimmel discussed the tradition of counting the Omer as well as the significance of Gematria. Students learned about Shavuot’s status as one of the three pilgrimage holidays, celebrating the offering of first fruits in Jerusalem. They connected these ancient practices to the tradition of “aliyah,” ascending to Jerusalem to share the first crops with priests and Levites during the temple era. Understanding the customs observed during the Omer period (such as refraining from celebrations, cutting one’s hair, or buying new clothes) until Lag B’Omer helped enrich their appreciation of this holiday.
Finally, students congregated in the main sanctuary with Rabbi Josh, absorbing insights on the imminent arrival of Shavuot.
