What is Open Door Shabbat?
Shabbat morning is the best time for Jews to come together, and the WORST time to feel out of place in synagogue.
Join the ACI once a month for a no-experience-necessary Shabbat service, where we will explore the:
- Structure of a prayer experience
- Meaning behind key Jewish prayers
- How to sing when you don't know Hebrew
At 10:00, there will be a brief meditation service, and at 10:30 we will start the learning service.
If you have any questions, contact Rabbi Josh at [email protected].

This Week in Hebrew School
|
In Language class, Kitah Aleph reviewed the letter “shin” and created it with colored playdough. We introduced the letter “bet” and shaped it with playdough after forming the letters with our bodies. We also revisited action words like “lakoom” (to stand), “lirkod” (to dance), “larootz” (to run), and “lashevet” (to sit), adding two new words: “lisovev” (to spin) and “likfotz” (to jump). A listening game helped reinforce words starting with “shin” and “bet.” We also played a movement game using Rosh Hashanah vocabulary, focusing on words like “tapuach” (apple) and “d’vash” (honey).
In Judaica Studies, students learned about the shofar—its source, cleaning, polishing, and use during Rosh Hashanah. We enjoyed the poem “5 Little Shofars.” Kitah Bet and Gimmel recited lines, followed by a memory game with Rosh Hashanah symbols.
Kitah Bet and Gimmel competed in an aleph-bet review game using Rosh Hashanah terms, spelling words like “tapuach,” “shofar,” “Torah,” “shana” (year), “rimon” (pomegranate), and “tishrei” (the Hebrew month).
In Judaica Studies, Kitah Bet discussed Rosh Hashanah customs, the four shofar blasts, and its animal origin. We reviewed holiday traditions, such as visiting the synagogue, wearing white, and enjoying festive meals, followed by a game using symbols to visualize these traditions.
Kitah Gimmel created a Rosh Hashanah ID Card poster, where each student focused on a topic like food or customs. We also learned about Tashlich, the ritual of casting away sins.
In art class, all three classes began a Rosh Hashanah mobile project using symbols like apples, honey, and round challahs, and included prayers explaining the significance of these foods. They will finish next week.
At the end of the day, all classes gathered in the main sanctuary, where Rabbi Josh blew three shofar blasts and explained their significance. His trombone skills added an impressive touch!

Get Involved Planning ACI's Events!

We have a great roster of activities planned for the High Holidays and beyond, but we can always use more help and more ideas. The next meeting will be October 8.

ACI is once again supporting City Harvest's High Holidays Food Drive. From September 16 through October 21, we will be collecting non-perishable, Kosher foods at ACI. Look for the box in the lobby, and donate whatever you can to support our fellow New Yorkers in need.
Of particular need are shelf-stable, non-perishable Kosher sources of protein, such as: beans, nuts, sardines, salmon, tuna, and peanut butter.
|
ACI is committed to serving our community’s needs. If you would like to add a name to our Mi Sheberach list, inform the synagogue about a hospital visit or death, or request pastoral care for yourself or someone you know, please fill out this simple form. All submissions are confidential.
