Help Us Build Our Sukkah!

Our next-door neighbors have granted ACI permission to use their backyard to build a sukkah, and we’re looking for some help constructing it before the holiday is over!

We’ll be building the sukkah on Sunday, October 20, from 3:30 to 5:30 PM. Please come by to lend a hand if you can! Kindly email [email protected] to let us know you're coming so that we can provide refreshments for all.

The Hebrew School will be using the sukkah for activities on Tuesday, and at 5:30 PM, we invite everyone from the community to join us in the mitzvot of the sukkah. Bring your dinner to eat there, or just come and shake the lulav! 🌿🌾🌿🍋

Kol Nidre Appeal

During this serious and spiritual time of year, we invite you to deepen your relationship with ACI. Please consider becoming a member, making a donation, or supporting the community by volunteering.

Read the full Kol Nidre appeal letter here.

Pathways to Judaism

This November, ACI will launch an intro to Judaism course called Pathways to Judaism. This is perfect for the person in your life who wants to learn about Judaism from the ground up, as well as significant people in your life who are of a religion other than Judaism (regardless of whether or not they are interested in conversion). If you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact Rabbi Josh.

Classes will take place on Monday evenings at 8:00-9:30 p.m. ET on Zoom and once a month on Shabbat morning at ACI at 9:00-10:00 a.m.

Open Door Shabbat Calendar

Our Open Door Shabbat services are back once a month, starting in November! Upcoming dates are:

  • November 9
  • December 14
  • January 11
  • February 15
  • March 8
  • April 26
  • May 10
  • June 14

What is Open Door Shabbat?

Shabbat morning is the best time for Jews to come together, and the WORST time to feel out of place in synagogue.

Join the ACI once a month for a no-experience-necessary Shabbat service, where we will explore the:

  • Structure of a prayer experience
  • Meaning behind key Jewish prayers
  • How to sing when you don't know Hebrew

At 10:00, there will be a brief meditation service, and at 10:30 we will start the learning service.

If you have any questions, contact Rabbi Josh at [email protected].

This Week in Hebrew School

Kitah Alef

In Judaica Studies, students learned about the festive holiday of Sukkot, its connection to the Exodus from Egypt, and how the sukkah provided temporary shelter for the Jews in the desert. They also learned how Sukkot coincides with the fruit harvest in Israel. We explored the Arba Minim (Four Species) — the Etrog (citron), Lulav (palm branch), Hadas (myrtle), and Aravah (willow) — and practiced shaking the lulav in six directions, symbolizing God’s presence everywhere. Students reinforced their learning with a worksheet.

In Hebrew Language, we reviewed the letters learned so far, played a movement game using Hebrew words for stand, sit, jump, turn, dance, walk, and run, and practiced reading three-letter words.

In Arts & Crafts, students began making dream-catcher sukkah decorations.

Kitah Bet

In Judaica Studies, students explored Sukkot through hands-on learning, focusing on the Arba Minim and their symbolism. We also introduced the tradition of Ushpizin—symbolically inviting guests into the sukkah. Each student had the opportunity to hold the Lulav and Etrog and recite the blessings.

In Hebrew Language, we reviewed movement words and played aleph-bet bingo with Sukkot riddles.

In Arts & Crafts, students started creating dream-catcher sukkah decorations.

Kitah Gimmel

This week in Judaica Studies, students learned about Sukkot by exploring the Arba Minim and practicing the blessings. We also discussed Ushpizin, the spiritual ancestors we symbolically invite to join us in the sukkah, and asked students who they would invite to their own sukkah.

In Hebrew Language, we reviewed movement words and played aleph-bet bingo with Sukkot riddles.

In Arts & Crafts, students continued working on their dream-catcher sukkah decorations.

Get Involved Planning ACI's Events!

We have a great roster of activities planned for the High Holidays and beyond, but we can always use more help and more ideas. If you're interested in helping to plan and run our community events, please join our standing Events Committee meetings, the second Tuesday of every month at 8pm (over Zoom).

Reach out to [email protected] for the meeting link.

LAST CHANCE! High Holiday Food Drive

ACI is once again supporting City Harvest's High Holidays Food Drive. From September 16 through October 21, we will be collecting non-perishable, Kosher foods at ACI. Look for the box in the lobby, and donate whatever you can to support our fellow New Yorkers in need.

Of particular need are shelf-stable, non-perishable Kosher sources of protein, such as: beans, nuts, sardines, salmon, tuna, and peanut butter.

Pastoral Requests

ACI is committed to serving our community’s needs. If you would like to add a name to our Mi Sheberach list, inform the synagogue about a hospital visit or death, or request pastoral care for yourself or someone you know, please fill out this simple form. All submissions are confidential.
