After Josh Abrams led a lovely Havdalah service on Saturday evening, ACI kicked off its centennial celebration with our first wine tasting in decades! While kids enjoyed a movie in the chapel, adults sampled amazing kosher wines from New Zealand, Italy, Israel, and the Western US. We tasted everything from cabernets and pinot noirs to sauvignon blancs and muscats.
Mitchell Blas and Sue Ann Vajda provided delicious charcuterie platters, vegan dips, and veggie crudités to complement the wines. Pearl Schwartz from Hakerem Wines guided us through each tasting, sharing tips on how to evaluate appearance, flavor profiles, and overall quality. Everyone had fun rating wines on scorecards—a perfect blend of celebration and learning. Now we all have some fantastic kosher wine options for our next Yom Tov!
Want to buy these wines? Email [email protected] to place orders—we'll purchase them tax-exempt in bulk for pickup at ACI, and Hakerem will donate 10% back to the synagogue. Or shop directly at Hakerem Wines (141-22 Jewel Avenue, www.hakeremwines.com) where you can see all available options. Please mention the ACI wine tasting event in order to get the sales tax exemption and the 10% donation to ACI.!

Open Door Shabbat Calendar
|
Our Open Door Shabbat services are back once a month! Upcoming dates are:
- March 8 - TOMORROW!
- April 26
- May 10
- June 14
What is Open Door Shabbat?
Shabbat morning is the best time for Jews to come together, and the WORST time to feel out of place in synagogue.
Join the ACI once a month for a no-experience-necessary Shabbat service, where we will explore the:
- Structure of a prayer experience
- Meaning behind key Jewish prayers
- How to sing when you don't know Hebrew
At 10:00, there will be a brief meditation service, and at 10:30 we will start the learning service.
If you have any questions, contact Rabbi Josh at [email protected].

This Week in Hebrew School
|
In Hebrew Language, Kitah Aleph and Bet reviewed the letter "peh," practicing writing and reading Purim-related Hebrew words: פורים (Purim), מתנות לאביונים (gifts for the poor), משלוח מנות (Purim baskets), משתה (party), and מגילה (scroll). They completed a Purim worksheet, coloring a clown by solving simple math problems.
Kitah Gimmel reviewed familiar Purim words and practiced more challenging ones like תחפושת (disguise), בגדים (clothes), and רעשן (noisemaker). Students completed a Purim word search without vowels and answered Purim-related questions. (We'll test their knowledge in next Tuesday's Purim Jeopardy challenge!)
In Arts and Crafts, all three classes painted murals featuring themes from the Megillah: the town of Shushan, Achashveirosh, Queens Esther and Vashti, Mordechai, and Haman. Kitah Aleph added cut-out hamantaschen to their murals.
In Judaic Studies, Kitah Aleph and Bet read "Sammy Spider's First Purim" and discussed how families prepare for the holiday. Students noticed the Shapiro family making costumes, baking hamantaschen, and creating groggers from paper plates. The class sang Purim songs with musical instruments, bringing festive energy to the classroom.
Students enjoyed "Mr. Clown," where each child performed talents like magic tricks, songs, gymnastics, or creative dances. Their smiles showed how much they enjoyed this break from our structured Hebrew lessons.
Kitah Gimmel studied the Book of Esther, set during the Jewish exile in 5th-century BCE Persia. This led to discussions about Jewish history, including the Babylonian exile after the First Temple's destruction and how Jews, led by Ezra and Nehemiah, eventually returned to rebuild the Second Temple.
For our Jewish Personalities Research Project, Ezra Schwartz delivered an excellent poster presentation on "Hammerin' Hank" Greenberg of the Detroit Tigers.
The day concluded with all students gathering in the sanctuary to sing Purim songs, accompanied by Morah Shana on guitar.
