ACI's Purim Carnival Was a Great Success!
|
This past Sunday, the Astoria Center of Israel welcomed a record number of families from Northwestern Queens to its annual Purim Carnival. Children eagerly tested their skills at arcade games; collected tickets for prizes; enjoyed colorful face painting; and used a lively photo booth with friends and family. Two arts and crafts stations kept little hands busy, while classic carnival refreshments added to the festive atmosphere. Even officers from the 114th Precinct stopped by.
A highlight was the costume showcase, where children introduced themselves on stage. Hebrew school members joined the Education Director to perform Purim songs, and the festivities concluded with Dave the Magician, whose dazzling tricks—especially pulling a live bunny from a hat—left everyone in awe, perfectly capping off the celebration.
A huge thanks to all of the volunteers who made this possible, especially Joanna Muenz for organizing this event.

Open Door Shabbat Calendar

Our Open Door Shabbat services are back once a month! Upcoming dates are:
What is Open Door Shabbat?
Shabbat morning is the best time for Jews to come together, and the WORST time to feel out of place in synagogue.
Join the ACI once a month for a no-experience-necessary Shabbat service, where we will explore the:
- Structure of a prayer experience
- Meaning behind key Jewish prayers
- How to sing when you don't know Hebrew
At 10:00, there will be a brief meditation service, and at 10:30 we will start the learning service.
If you have any questions, contact Rabbi Josh at [email protected].

This Week in Hebrew School
|
This week our Hebrew school launched into the Passover unit across all classes. In Hebrew Language, Kitah Aleph and Bet practiced writing key terms including פֶּסַח (Passover), הַגָּדָה (Haggadah), and לֵיל סֵדֶר (Seder night). Kitah Aleph focused on reciting the Mah Nishtanah while Kitah Bet learned verses from Dayenu. Kitah Gimmel expanded their vocabulary and studied אֶחָד מִי יוֹדֵעַ ("Who Knows One"), mastering the first five verses.
In Judaica Studies, Kitah Aleph explored Jacob's family stories, discussing how jealousy emerged through Joseph's special coat and dreams. They traced Joseph's journey to Egypt and the subsequent enslavement of the Israelites, with Moses and the plagues coming next week. Kitah Bet examined how famine drove people to Egypt and how a new Pharaoh enslaved the Israelites. They discussed the experience of slavery and began exploring different Haggadahs. Kitah Gimmel reviewed the Jewish timeline from Abraham to Egyptian slavery, studied the Seder structure, and learned that all Haggadahs include Seder plate instructions. They also practiced singing Kadesh U'rechatz.
For Arts & Crafts, Kitah Aleph students created their own decorated Passover Seder plates.
